Christantus Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
