The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
